I really have no interest in getting into a debate on this. "Adding memory (DRAM, VRAM) or other user-installable upgrade or expansion products" Your statement about not finding exclusions misinterprets the statement from Apple which says (emphasis mine): Whether or not the upgrade is easy is irrelevant it's solely a matter of what Apple allows, and the user upgrading the SSD in an MBA themselves is not considered to be allowed by the user. Again, if the upgrade requires the system's case to be opened and that case is secured by screws (as opposed to a simple set of latches as in the Power Macs and Mac Pros) Apple considers that not to be user-upgradable. It would certainly offer clarity if they would. I look for, and don't find Apple indicating that pentalobe screws define an non-user serviceable security device. That I do definitely see as a warranty-voiding issue. The double-sided cards in the higher capacities have a bit of difficulty, even bowing the card itself, and making substantial contact pressure on the memory chips if "forced" into the 11" chassis. You can't likely install anything other than a single-sided SSD for this computer, even though you might make it work a double sided card. I do see a problem however on the late 2010 11" MBA, there are limitations. Unlike the memory in this specific case, the MBA's storage media is on a relatively very easy to remove and replace "expansion card". In the past, storage media has ordinarily been considered user-upgradeable. I think it more likely falls into the category of "May" void warranty, lacking any statement from Apple on the subject. The "kits" that entities like OWC provide for this upgrade are sold complete for the user to perform the work. Have you any evidence that Apple has deemed that the part is not user-upgradeable, or are you presuming such because of the pentalobe screws?Īpple permits user upgrades, unless the part is definitively described as not user-upgradeable.
